REALLY fast, specially if it’s BAD news.

Too fast. Depends on the type of news.

Many factors come into play.
If its good news or bad (good/slow – bad/fast in general)
If it effects the general populous
How many people are around
How many people the people who heard the news know (huh?)
Of course now-a-days with the internet its just a matter of if its on the yahoo home page or not.

News has come along way from smoke signals. The speed of traveling news depends on the avenue of transport. I would say the shortest (fastest) route between one and another is telepathy, as in prayer.

It’s like the question of how fast the Big Bang Explosion was. It expanded and created space as it was blowing outward, so in that sense it was faster than light. This is because news does not just travel outward in one direction, but it flows horizontally along each level it reaches, to fill that "tier". And since only 6 degree/tiers separate any two people alive on this planet, I’ll guess that the Speed of News is 1/6 th Lightspeed. That would be approximately 60,000 miles per second, or 72,000 km /sec.
