Travel right before starting OPT possible?
If my OPT begins next year in February and I would travel home before that, will I be able to come back to the USA? My student visa already expired. I would have to apply for a new one in my home country. My question is, how difficult is it to get a new one for the OPT year? Will they issue a new student visa just for OPT?
Do they issue them just for OPT in general, yes. Will they issue one for you, who knows.
Each visa application is considered on an individual basis and on its own merits, we cannot answer your question with any degree of certainty because cannot read the mind of the Consular Officer you will get on the day of your interview.

OPT is based on F1 visa. So you need to bring I-20 SEVIS from your school, the approval notice of OPT to renew your F1 visa at home. More likely you will get the duration of OPT period for F1.
