Which branch of the military would command space travel?

In the distant future, when mankind travels amongst the stars, which branch of the military will control the space ships? They would technically be flying craft, so I guess the Air Force might be in control. But in many space travel fiction stories (Halo and Star Trek for example) it is the Navy that controls the space ships.

The Navy and Air Force would most likley be merged into 1 branch.
Since by that time ships would be obsolete, since everything can be transported by air crafts.

nasa is an extension of the air force (well, sort of)

That would depend greatly on the political and global situation on Earth, on what had occurred between now and that time when we do go into space.
However, one would assume each branch would get a space version as well. Without currently knowing even if there are alien species to find, much less how aggressive they would be, we would need a defense force. That should include a force capable of invasion (the Marines), space travel (as you said either Navy or Air Force, or combination of the two), and an army for defense as well as the continuation of any invasion should invasion be necessary.

NASA. the air force at one time controlled space travel but the gov thought it better to be run by non military personnel. unless you are talking about "space war" in witch case it would most likely be Marines and Navy.
